The United Methodist University (UMU) in Liberia is a product of vision, perseverance, and a commitment to education rooted in faith. Its origins date back to the 1970s when the United Methodist Church in Liberia recognized the growing demand for higher education among its members and the nation at large. In response, the church-initiated plans to establish an institution that would provide quality academic instruction grounded in Christian values.
This vision first took practical shape in 1980, when a junior college-level business program was launched at the College of West Africa (CWA) in Monrovia. However, the onset of Liberia’s civil war significantly delayed progress. Despite this disruption, the church remained steadfast in its mission, and in 1997, it renewed its commitment to higher education by laying the foundation for a full-fledged university.
On October 9, 1998, the Legislature of the Republic of Liberia officially chartered the United Methodist University. The university began academic operations in January 2000, with Rev. Dr. Emmanuel F. Bailey serving as its first president. Initially offering a limited number of programs, UMU has since expanded significantly, now encompassing multiple campuses in Monrovia, Gbarnga, Ganta, and other regions.
UMU has become a vital institution in Liberia’s post-war reconstruction, providing affordable and accessible education to thousands of students across the country. With its strong emphasis on ethics, leadership, and service, the university continues to play a transformative role in shaping Liberia’s future through its diverse academic offerings, community involvement, and commitment to spiritual growth.
The United Methodist University is guided by the belief that education should nurture the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Rooted in Christian values, our philosophy centers on the pursuit of knowledge through academic excellence, moral integrity, and service to humanity. We are committed to developing ethical leaders who are intellectually competent, socially responsible, and spiritually grounded, equipped to transform their communities and the world.
