BRIEF BACKGROUND OF THE UNITED METHODIST UNIVERSITY IN LIBERIA
The United Methodist University (UMU) in Liberia is a product of vision, perseverance, and a faith-based commitment to education. Its origins trace back to the 1970s when the United Methodist Church in Liberia recognized the growing demand for higher education among its members and the nation. In response, the church-initiated plans to establish an institution that would provide quality academic instruction based on Christian values. This vision first took practical shape in 1980, when a junior college-level business program was launched at the College of West Africa (CWA) in Monrovia. However, the onset of Liberia’s civil war significantly delayed progress. Despite this disruption, the church remained steadfast in its mission, and in 1997, it renewed its commitment to higher education by laying the foundation for a full-fledged university. On October 9, 1998, the Legislature of the Republic of Liberia officially chartered the United Methodist University. The university began academic operations in January 2000, with Rev. Dr. Emmanuel F. Bailey serving as its first president. Initially offering a limited number of programs, UMU has since expanded significantly, now encompassing multiple campuses in Monrovia, Gbarnga, Ganta, and other regions. UMU has become a vital institution in Liberia’s post-war reconstruction, providing affordable and accessible education to thousands of students across the country. With its strong emphasis on ethics, leadership, and service, the university continues to play a transformative role in shaping Liberia’s future through its diverse academic offerings, community involvement, and commitment to spiritual growth.
THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS IN THE COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION (CMA)
The College of Management and Administration is one of six colleges at UMU offering various programs, including first-level degrees (Bachelor’s) in Economics, Management, Public Administration, Supply Chain Management, Procurement, and Accounting. The United Methodist University’s Department of Economics provides a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. As one of the founding departments, the program requires 136 credit hours and spans eight semesters (16 weeks long) to earn a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Degree in Economics.
Overarching Goal of Instructional/Learning Materials in the Department
The primary objective of the lecture notes is to equip students with a solid understanding of important economic concepts, allowing them to apply this knowledge in their everyday lives. Achieving this requires the combined efforts of the student, our support, and the instructor’s guidance to help the student grasp a broad spectrum of economic, social, and political issues that might otherwise remain confusing and elusive.
Towards achieving this objective, the methodology for class presentation incorporates a combination of lectures, discussions, and assignments. In terms of evaluation, there are two major exams administered every semester (the mid-term, which constitutes 40 points, and the final exam, 50 points). Assignments account for 7 points, while the remaining 3 points are allotted for attendance.
The grading system of the Department follows the same system as the University’s grading Scale:
Less than 60°F
